They’ve already started gutting it for you!
Step 1) Buy it
Step 2) Get it running and finish gutting it
Step 3) Rallycross
Step 4) ????
Step 5) Profit

Probably very. Just throw a K20 in there and call it a day.

I kinda like carpet. Maybe just sound deadening on the rear firewall and then just cheap outdoor carpet. Preferably weatherproof for when the T tops leak.

Bad. Really, really bad. If there’s that must rust
showing,
there’s more. Check all of the suspension mounting points. For what it’s worth, I bought mine in similar shape but with most of its interior, original paint, and a running engine for iirc $900, but that was a rare price even then. 4As are pretty hardy (have you seen the pics of the insides of mine
after
I completely blew the engine at and managed to force it another 30 miles with smoke pouring out of it? The insides somehow still looked new apart from the cylinder hole that was present when I bought it), so there’s a good chance the reason it’s not running is something stupid. The EFI system and ECU are really simple and easy to troubleshoot. If you’re semi-handy with an engine and the parts are good, you’ll get it running. I’m not going to say don’t do it, but know what you’re getting yourself in to. If you’ve never driven one of these, you’ll be amazed when you get it running for the first time. They’re magic. There’s a reason anyone who’s ever owned one can’t stop talking about it.

I was never really planning on it but the fact that it was resprayed is also alarming.

It’s a perfect candidate for swapping in a 20v 4AG/6-speed out of an AE101, turning it into a micro Ferrari.

Depends on how bad the rust is especially with that respray. If its solid it would be a good rallycross or autocross beater

I wasn’t even looking to buy it but the rust would be a major factor.

The body = very bad, that much body rust tells me that its basically gone underneath.
The engine = perfectly fine, Im not sure if you can actually kill a 4AGE.

Being an 87, it
’
s probably a 3 rib, though some were 7 rib. If it were a 7 rib, I’d consider buying it for parts, but I’d be surprised if that shell’s still good. never know till you dig into it though. Charlie’s hideous, but everything that matters is fine, so A-Dub magic?

I will fully admit that I know very little about MR2s. What’s the difference between 3 and 7 rib?

Bottom end strength. The 7 rib blocks are less likely to flex with serious load because of the extra ribs cast into the outside and the big end con-rod bearing diameter’s larger. Depending on how dirty the engine bay is, you can identify it by the color of the letters on the cam covers. 7 ribs are red and black letters while 3 ribs are just black and blue.
